Thanks to all of our amazing partners for their work on the Hawthorne EcoVillage’s first Summer Green Fair held last Saturday afternoon, June 20, 2015. It was a beautiful day and we had a nice turnout from residents.
Many thanks to Bo Scarim for obtaining the Hennepin County grant that funded the recycling activities, and to Matt Carlquist for working with Bo to organize and get the word out for this event. The Mississippi Watershed Management Organization was a great partner and many bottles of eco-friendly cleaner were made thanks to Michaela and her team! Kellie Kish from City of Minneapolis Recycling brought a wealth of knowledge, materials and encouragement to our efforts. We gave out information on recycling, educated on sorting, and kids decorated recycling containers and bags.
Neighbors also connected and signed up for more neighborhood, garden, city and recycling news. In addition, our usual hard workers were present to pull the event together: Abbie Loosen from PPL, Ben Swegarden from Habitat and tireless Hawthorne volunteer, Bev Scherrer. We were also lucky enough to have three interns from Macalester College who are working with PPL. Minah Kim, Ben Vargo and Anna Lee were enthusiastic participants in our event. We were able to visit and have fun along with delicious food from Breaking Bread Café and Cookie Cart.
We are a happy work group and are all enjoying getting to know the area residents. We will be continuing our efforts with another event on Saturday, July 25th from Noon – 3 pm.
